Annotation

The article is devoted to the Olympiads of schoolchildren in mathematics and the role of such Olympiads in the development of cognitive activity of students. It is emphasized that holding such mathematical Olympiads makes it possible to find future talented young researchers. The article provides historical information about mathematical Olympiads held in Russia. For clarity, the tasks of three types of Olympiads organized on the basis of higher educational institutions are considered. It is noted that the Moscow City University has been actively involved in the United Interuniversity Mathematical Olympiad of Schoolchildren (OMMO) for many years in a row and provides its own platform for this event.
